Back pain. Neck stiffness. An old sports injury that keeps coming back.

If this sounds familiar, you’ve probably tried stretching, resting, massage, or pain medication. These can help, but what if they aren’t addressing the real reason your symptoms keep returning?
At Just Physio, we believe one of the most effective ways to move better to reduce pain is to understand why your body has started moving differently in the first place. Pain is often a signal that something isn’t working as efficiently as it should, rather than the problem itself.
Better movement could be the missing piece to lasting pain relief.
Your Body Is Always Adapting
The human body is incredibly clever. Following an injury, long hours at a desk or in a car, repetitive sport, or periods of stress, your body finds new ways to keep you moving.

Initially these adaptations are helpful.
Over time, however, they can place extra stress on other joints and muscles. A stiff ankle may contribute to knee pain. Reduced hip mobility can overload the lower back. Shallow breathing can increase tension in the neck and shoulders.
This is why we don’t simply ask, “Where does it hurt?”
We also ask, “Is your body moving as efficiently as it could?” And “How has your body adapted its movement patterns to keep you moving?”
Move Better to Reduce Pain: Start With These Three Simple Checks
These quick movement checks aren’t designed to diagnose an injury. Instead, they help you become more aware of how your body moves and whether it may be relying on compensations.
1. Check Your Breathing
Place your hands around your lower ribs and take a slow, deep breath.
Does your breath feel calm and effortless? Can you feel your lower ribs gently expand to the sides and your tummy rise naturally, without your shoulders lifting?
Your breathing pattern can provide valuable clues about how your body moves. By noticing where your breath naturally goes and gradually encouraging more movement through your lower ribs and abdomen, you can help your body move with greater ease, efficiency, and resilience.

2. Can You Stand Up Without Using Your Hands?
Sit on a standard chair with your feet hip-width apart and stand up without using your hands.
Notice how your body moves. Does it feel smooth and comfortable, or do you lean forwards, shift to one side, use momentum, or notice pain or stiffness? These observations can provide valuable clues about your movement patterns.
3. Can You Comfortably Turn to Look Over Both Shoulders?
While sitting, slowly rotate to look over each shoulder.
Does one side feel noticeably stiffer than the other? Do you have to move your whole body to compensate?
Small differences in movement often provide valuable clues about how your body is functioning.
Why Physiotherapy Is About More Than Pain Relief
Movement is much more than exercise. Better movement creates better options for your body.
Every movement provides information to your brain, helping it coordinate muscles, protect joints, and move efficiently. The more movement options your body has, the less it needs to rely on compensations that can eventually contribute to discomfort or pain.
Our goal isn’t simply to make pain disappear.
We help you improve your breathing, restore efficient movement patterns, and give your body the confidence to move well again. When your body moves better, it often hurts less, performs better, and becomes more resilient for whatever life demands.
