New Year’s resolutions may be a controversial and cliché thing for some people. However, let us rather see it as creating goals for our own self-improvement, self-development, and self-growth. Goal-setting gives us the opportunity to envision and create a better life for ourselves, and allows us to maintain focus on what is important to us. Goal-setting is a very personal process, and should be authentic to YOU.
Finding Inspiration to help you to Create Your best 2024
I was truly inspired by Mel Robbins’ talk on how to create the best 2024. Mel is a podcast host, author and motivational speaker. Mel compares New Year’s goal-setting to using Google maps: “How can you know where you are heading if you don’t know where you are coming from?”.
Before we can set goals for the New Year we need to assess where we are right now. So, think about the past 12 months of your life and reflect deeply on it. Think about what your map looks like for this New Year. Define your starting point, and visualize where you are heading in 2024. Take time to process your thoughts and feelings, so that you set goals that are meaningful to you. Goal-setting is not about what is expected of you, but what is important to you personally.

The Best Tool for Goal-Setting to help You to Create Your best 2024
The famous Stop-Start-Continue exercise is a great tool to use if you want to strategically plan your best 2024. This exercise is based on the following questions:
- What are the highlights from your past year?
- What were the hardest aspects of your past year?
- What did you learn about yourself this year?
- What are the things you are going to stop doing this year?
- What are you going to continue doing (that is working for you) this year?
- What are you going to start doing in the coming year?
For each question, consider different components of your life such as your health, your relationships, your occupation, your spirituality or life purpose, and your pleasures. What are the things that made you happy and excited you? Also think back to the things that were not so pleasant, and what you can do in the New Year to make them more pleasant, to avoid them, or react differently to them? What do you dream of doing, becoming, or achieving?
Ask yourself WHY these things are important to you, because this will guide you in your goal-setting journey. In this way, you really connect with your deeper self. You will be surprised how much you will learn about yourself!

The SMART principle guides you in structuring your goals in the following way:
S – SPECIFIC :
Be very specific about what goal you want to achieve. E.g. instead of simply stating that you want to start exercising in 2024, you can say you want to do a 30min workout at the gym 2x per week.
M – MEASURABLE
Being able to measure your progress is a great way to stay motivated. If you have a measure that quantifies your achievements, you will know exactly when your specific goal has been achieved.
A – ACHIEVABLE
A goal is not an unrealistic wish. You are setting a goal that you know you will be able to achieve, even if it will require discipline and effort. E.g. if your goal is to “eat healthier”, start by swapping one unhealthy snack per day with a raw smoothie, a fruit, or a hand full of nuts instead of wanting to change all your meals.
R – REALISTIC/RELEVANT
Goals empower you to strive for something greater, but not impossible. A realistic goal is one that you can reach considering your current life situation and resources, and one that aligns with your personal values.
T – TIME
Having a time frame in which you want to achieve your goals is great to keep you motivated. So, set a definite time or date by which you want to achieve your goal.
